PE Sports Funding

School Sports Programme at Richard Coates CE Primary and Middle School

Richard Coates CE School is committed to supporting the development of healthy lifestyles and wellbeing of its pupils. The school sports programme is a central part of the curriculum and aims to foster a love of sport and fitness through high quality provision and the delivery of a wide range of opportunities and experiences. The school received £9,176 for 2016/17 from the government specifically for sport funding and has used this money to improve provision and engagement in sports for pupils of all abilities as detailed below.

The principles that guide underpin our sports programme are:

  1. High Quality Provision

Richard Coates CE School employs subject specialist PE teachers (one male and one female) and sport specific coaches to deliver PE. CPD (continuous professional development) plays an important role at Richard Coates and ensures our teachers remain fully up-to-date through coaching, working with other professionals across the partnership and using nationally accredited coaches and courses. We are also proud to utilise our staff’s expertise through the sharing good practice and contributing to the development of teachers and coaches in other schools.

  1. Diverse Range

We appreciate that our pupils have different interests when it comes to sport so we aim to provide pupils with the opportunity to experience a wide range and develop their skills in both competitive and individual sporting activities. Our curriculum includes traditional competitive sports such as rugby, netball and football as well as a range of individual sports such as swimming, gymnastics and dance. We also cover a range of less traditional sports such as orienteering, dry rowing, table tennis and basketball, to name but a few.

  1. Out of School Hours/Lunchtime Learning

Richard Coates CE School delivers a range of lunchtimes and afterschool programmes including netball, football, rugby, basketball, judo and table tennis. For further detail please see our Extra Curricular Timetable. All teachers/coaches have appropriate qualifications and a current CRB.

We also have a link to various local sports clubs so if there is an activity which we cannot deliver as an extra-curricular club, we signpost pupils to the nearest local provider.

  1. Festivals and Competition

Richard Coates works in close partnership with other schools across the Morpeth and Ponteland School Sports Partnership to promote competitive games across both genders and all ages. We ensure our provision includes opportunities for all levels of skill and abilities.

  1. Gifted and Talented and Young Sports’ Leaders

We work to ensure that talented individuals are recognised early and that opportunities are provided to challenge them against other very able pupils, ensuring they make excellent progress and their talents are developed. Our Young Sports Leader programme allows students to focus on leadership skills in sport – developing the skills needed for ensuring the sustainability of sport in the future and ensuring the pupils’ voice is at the heart of our provision.

  1. Provision for Young People with Disabilities

Richard Coates is proud of the specialist programme it delivers that meets the needs of all.  We are committed to ensuring our provision is inclusive and targets opportunities for young disabled people. We support pupils with additional needs within the PE curriculum with specifically trained teaching assistants.

  1. Membership

By joining groups such as the Youth Sport Trust Membership we receive support to achieve whole school priorities in and through PE and school sport. We are able to keep up-to-date with the latest national information, resources, training and events. It also allows us to contribute strategically to national policy and be involved in the development of national programmes.

Outcomes for Pupils

We measure the success of our sports programme through a number of ways:

  • Pupil engagement in extra-curricular events and activities
  • Achievement for individuals
  • Sporting success of individuals and teams in competitive events
  • Student voice feedback
  • Progress data
  • Understanding and adoption of healthy lifestyles
  • Self-esteem and confidence in PE and the wider curriculum
  • Attendance
  • Parental feedback
